Best Scenic Train Rides in Switzerland: Routes Compared
The famous names do not offer the same trip. Some deliver glaciers and high passes; others are better for lakes, villages, flexibility or a shorter travel day.

Choose the Bernina Express for the best concentration of glaciers, lakes and railway engineering. Choose the Glacier Express for a full-day panoramic experience, the GoldenPass Express for villages and Lake Geneva, the Gotthard Panorama Express for a boat-and-train day, and the Luzern–Interlaken Express for the easiest scenic journey without a premium-train commitment.

1. Bernina Express: best scenic train overall
The Bernina line compresses an extraordinary range of landscapes into one journey: the Albula railway, Landwasser Viaduct, Lago Bianco, Bernina Pass, Alp Grüm and the Brusio circular viaduct before descending toward Tirano in Italy.
Rhaetian Railway says the panorama service crosses 196 bridges and 55 tunnels. The full Chur–Tirano journey takes about four hours, while St. Moritz–Tirano takes about two hours fifteen minutes.
- Choose it if: you want the strongest scenery-to-time ratio.
- Best direction: either works; choose the one that fits onward travel rather than chasing a fixed “best side.”
- Good alternative: regular regional trains travel the same Bernina line with opening windows and more departure options.
- Watch out: the panorama train needs both a valid ticket and a compulsory seat reservation.
Route, duration and services checked on the official Bernina Express page. RhB also explains the difference between the panorama service and regular trains on the same line.
2. Glacier Express: best full-day panorama
The Glacier Express links Zermatt and St. Moritz in roughly eight hours. Its appeal is variety rather than one continuous dramatic section: Matterhorn country, the Rhine gorge, Oberalp Pass, stone viaducts and the Engadin all appear across one long day.
The complete route crosses 291 bridges and 91 tunnels. In 2026, the compulsory reservation is CHF 54 in first or second class, on top of a valid ticket. The official full-route second-class ticket is listed up to CHF 159 before discounts or accepted travel passes.
- Choose it if: the train itself is the main event of your day.
- Best feature: a continuous reserved seat with panorama windows and optional dining.
- Watch out: eight hours is long, and the fixed reservation reduces flexibility.
- Budget option: regular trains cover the same corridor in sections, usually with changes and no Glacier Express reservation.
Journey length, route and prices checked on the official Glacier Express route, price and timetable pages.
3. GoldenPass Express: best for lakes and villages
The GoldenPass Express connects Montreux and Interlaken without a scheduled change at Zweisimmen. Starting near Lake Geneva and the vineyards above Montreux, it climbs through Pays-d’Enhaut and Gstaad before reaching the Bernese Oberland.
- Choose it if: your itinerary already links western Switzerland with Interlaken.
- Best feature: the contrast between Lake Geneva, green valleys and chalet villages.
- Reservation: optional but strongly recommended; CHF 20 per person in first or second class.
- Published fare: CHF 56 one way in second class before discounts.
GoldenPass is less extreme than Bernina, but it integrates more naturally into a first-time Switzerland itinerary. You do not need to sacrifice an entire day just to ride it.
Reservation fees, published fares and accepted passes checked on the official MOB fare page. Verify the live timetable before travel.
4. Gotthard Panorama Express: best mixed experience
This journey combines a boat across Lake Lucerne with a first-class panorama train over the historic Gotthard mountain route to Bellinzona and Lugano. It is the most varied option in this list because the landscape, transport mode, climate and architecture all change during the day.
For 2026, SBB lists daily operation from April 18 to October 18. The panorama train requires a valid first-class ticket and a CHF 24 reservation. The train section can also be booked separately from the boat.
- Choose it if: you want one polished day linking Lucerne with Ticino.
- Best feature: lake, historic railway and Mediterranean-style Lugano in one itinerary.
- Watch out: it is seasonal and more expensive because first class is required.
Season, route and 2026 reservation conditions checked on the official SBB Gotthard Panorama Express page and SBB’s 2026 announcement.
5. Luzern–Interlaken Express: best easy scenic transfer
This regular panorama train passes Lake Lucerne, Lake Sarnen, the Brünig Pass and turquoise Lake Brienz. It runs hourly and takes about one hour fifty minutes, making it the easiest scenic ride to place inside a normal itinerary.
- Choose it if: you are already moving between Lucerne and Interlaken.
- Best feature: no premium panorama supplement is required.
- Reservation: optional; CHF 16 from May 2 to November 1, 2026 and CHF 12 in the lower-demand period.
- Watch out: popular departures can be busy, especially in summer.

Which scenic train should you choose?
| Your priority | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Most dramatic landscapes | Bernina Express | Glaciers, high pass, lakes and viaducts in one route |
| Luxury full-day experience | Glacier Express | Reserved panorama seat, long route and onboard dining |
| Best fit for a first trip | GoldenPass Express | Connects Montreux and Interlaken naturally |
| Boat and train combination | Gotthard Panorama Express | Lake Lucerne plus historic Gotthard railway |
| Short and simple | Luzern–Interlaken Express | Hourly service and 1h50 journey |
| Lowest-cost flexibility | Regional Bernina trains | Same famous line without the premium panorama service |
Panorama train or regular train?
A panorama train gives you large windows, a reserved seat and a clearly packaged experience. A regular train often gives you more departures, flexible stops, lower reservation costs and windows that may open for better photographs.
| Choose panorama | Choose regular trains |
|---|---|
| You want one simple booking and a guaranteed seat | You want to stop overnight or break the route into sections |
| The journey itself is a highlight of the trip | You value flexibility and lower cost |
| You prefer onboard service and large windows | You want more departure times or opening windows |
Do not assume the expensive branded train has exclusive access to the scenery. On the Bernina and Glacier corridors, regular public trains use the same railway lines.
Are scenic trains covered by the Swiss Travel Pass?
The Swiss Travel Pass covers the underlying fare on many scenic routes, including the main routes in this guide. However, compulsory panorama-train seat reservations and supplements remain extra. The Gotthard Panorama Express also requires first-class travel for its panorama train section.
Before buying a pass, compare its cost with your complete itinerary rather than one scenic ride. Our Swiss Travel Pass break-even guide includes current prices and examples.
Best season for scenic rail travel
- June to September: long daylight, green valleys and the widest choice of services.
- Late September to October: autumn color and generally fewer tour groups.
- December to March: snow scenery, shorter daylight and fewer seasonal services.
- April and May: possible snow at altitude with spring valleys, but check maintenance and seasonal opening dates.
Mountain weather changes quickly. A cloudy morning can clear later, so avoid building a tight connection immediately after a scenic train when the route is the main reason for the day.
A practical three-route itinerary
- Lucerne to Interlaken: take the Luzern–Interlaken Express as a scenic transfer.
- Interlaken to Montreux: ride the GoldenPass Express and stay by Lake Geneva.
- St. Moritz to Tirano: finish with the Bernina route for the strongest Alpine scenery.
This combination avoids repeating similar landscapes and uses scenic trains as transport between bases. It is more efficient than taking several long out-and-back day trips.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most scenic train ride in Switzerland?
The Bernina route is our best overall choice because it combines glaciers, a high pass, turquoise lakes and exceptional railway engineering in one manageable day.

Choose Bernina for concentrated high-Alpine scenery and a shorter trip. Choose Glacier for an eight-hour, full-day panorama journey linking Zermatt and St. Moritz.

Yes on several corridors. Regular trains run over the Bernina and Glacier routes, while Luzern–Interlaken is a regular hourly service. Check connections and timetable details.

The base fare is covered on many routes, but compulsory panorama reservations and supplements are normally extra. Check the current validity map.
What is the best scenic train from Interlaken?
Take GoldenPass to Montreux for villages and Lake Geneva, or the Luzern–Interlaken Express toward Lucerne for lakes and the Brünig Pass.
What is the best month to go?
June to September gives long daylight and green landscapes. Late September and October add autumn color, while winter offers snow but fewer seasonal options.
The practical verdict
If you can choose only one, take the Bernina route. If you want a premium full-day experience, choose Glacier Express. For a first itinerary through Lucerne, Interlaken and Montreux, use the Luzern–Interlaken and GoldenPass trains as practical transfers. The best scenic train is the one that improves your route instead of forcing a long detour.
