Is Eurail legit? The evidence
Eurail is not an anonymous ticket-resale website. Its official company information identifies the operator as Interrail B.V., formerly Eurail B.V. until May 1, 2026, with an address in Utrecht and registration number 30206952 at the Dutch Chamber of Commerce. The company says the first Eurail Pass dates to 1959.
The official company history describes a network covering more than 250,000 km across 33 countries. Eurail’s press information has also stated that the business is owned by more than 35 European railway and ferry companies. Those facts make it a real, established travel product—not proof that it will be the cheapest option for your itinerary.
What changes on September 9, 2026?
Eurail’s website currently displays a prominent notice: “Eurail is becoming Interrail.” From September 9, the Interrail name will be used worldwide. The same notice says your pass, reservations, bookings and account stay the same. This is a brand transition, not a message telling customers to buy a replacement pass.
The legal company name has already changed from Eurail B.V. to Interrail B.V. That explains why a genuine payment confirmation, policy or company page may show the Interrail name even when you searched for Eurail. Use the official Eurail homepage during the transition and follow its own links rather than an unsolicited message.
No legitimate name change requires you to send a pass number, password or payment details in reply to an unexpected email or text. Open the official site or Rail Planner app yourself and check the account there.
What a legitimate Eurail Pass includes
The official pass guide currently offers Global Passes for travel in 33 countries and One Country Passes for a single destination. It is designed for residents of countries outside Europe; European residents generally use Interrail. After the worldwide brand change, eligibility rules still matter, so use your country of residence exactly as shown on your official identification.
A pass covers eligible railway travel on participating networks during valid travel days. It does not automatically include local metros, city buses, accommodation or every private train. A mobile pass is stored in the Rail Planner app, where you add journeys and generate the day ticket needed for inspection.
Why do some travelers think Eurail is a scam?
Most serious complaints come from a gap between the product people imagine and the product the rules actually provide. “Travel pass” can sound like every train is open and free after purchase. In reality, capacity-controlled trains may need a separate reservation, passholder places can sell out, and a travel day is still consumed according to the pass rules.

Seat reservations are the biggest hidden cost
Eurail’s official reservation guide says reservations are not included and may be required on busy high-speed, night and popular routes. A reservation guarantees your seat or sleeping place; the pass alone does not. France, Spain, Italy and Eurostar-heavy itineraries need especially careful budgeting.
Before buying a pass, list the actual trains you expect to use and check each reservation. An itinerary with regional German, Austrian or Swiss trains may be comparatively flexible. A fast itinerary built around Eurostar, international TGVs, Spanish high-speed trains and night sleepers can accumulate substantial extra fees.
How the mobile pass works

Refunds and exchanges are real—but conditional
Eurail publishes a detailed refund and exchange policy. Standard mobile passes are currently fully refundable within seven days of purchase. After that, an eligible unused pass can normally be refunded with a 10% fee or exchanged with a €25 fee, subject to the applicable policy and activation status. Promotional passes can have different conditions.
Once the validity period has started, an activated mobile pass cannot simply be deactivated. Unused travel days inside a partially used pass are not individually refundable. Seat reservations follow their own operator-specific rules, and booking fees can be non-refundable. Read the policy attached to the purchase instead of assuming the pass and every reservation share one cancellation rule.
The 2026 data security incident
A trustworthy review should not hide the company’s own security disclosure. In March 2026, Eurail published an updated incident statement saying unauthorized parties accessed customer data and that copied data had been offered for sale online. Eurail said it contacted customers whose data was accessed where contact details were available.
The statement also says Eurail does not store bank or credit-card information or a visual copy of a passport as part of its standard pass-purchase procedure. The company advised customers to change their Rail Planner password, avoid password reuse, monitor accounts and be alert to unexpected requests for personal information. This incident does not make the rail pass fake, but it is a valid reason to use a unique password and treat unsolicited messages cautiously.
How to avoid fake Eurail offers
- Type eurail.com yourself or use a saved official bookmark.
- Do not buy a “transferable” used mobile pass from a stranger.
- Do not send passwords, payment data or passport images through social messages.
- Confirm the seller, currency, refund rule and final price before payment.
- Save the confirmation and check that the pass appears in your official account.
