How long is the train from Rome to Florence?

The fastest Italo services cover the route in around 1 hour 25 minutes. Trenitalia describes its Frecciarossa journey as just over 1 hour 30 minutes. The exact time depends on the departure and stopping pattern, so use the duration shown for your train rather than assuming every service is equally fast.

This is one of the routes where rail beats flying for almost every city-centre trip. There is no airport transfer at either end, no airline-style check-in and no need to arrive hours before departure.

Frecciarossa or Italo: which train should you choose?

Both operators run modern high-speed trains on the same route. For most travelers, the better choice is not automatically the red train or the burgundy train—it is the departure with the best final price and ticket conditions.

Search the same date on both official websites. If two trains cost nearly the same, choose the one using your preferred Rome station and arriving at Firenze Santa Maria Novella. Saving a few euros is rarely worth an awkward departure or a restrictive ticket you may need to change.

Which stations should you book?

Roma Termini

Termini is the most convenient departure station for many visitors. It connects with Metro lines A and B, buses, taxis and the Leonardo Express to Fiumicino Airport. It is large and busy, so arrive with enough time to check the departure board and walk to the platform.

Roma Tiburtina

Some high-speed services call at or depart from Tiburtina. This can be more convenient if you are staying in eastern Rome, but it is not interchangeable with Termini. Read the full station name on the booking result before paying.

Firenze Santa Maria Novella

Firenze S. M. Novella—often shortened to Firenze SMN—is the station most visitors want. It sits on the edge of the historic centre, roughly a ten-minute walk from the Duomo. A ticket to another Florence station can leave you needing an extra local connection.

How much do Rome to Florence tickets cost?

There is no fixed normal fare. Prices change with demand, departure time, travel date and how early you book. Italo currently advertises advance tickets from €14.90, but that is a starting price rather than a fare you will find on every train.

For a fair comparison, add any flexibility or comfort you need before deciding. The cheapest ticket may have a fee for changes or offer little refund value. A slightly higher fare can be sensible when your flight, hotel check-out or wider itinerary might move.

Do you need to validate the ticket?

A named Frecciarossa or Italo high-speed ticket is tied to a specific train, coach and seat. Keep the mobile ticket or booking code available and board the service shown on it. You do not stamp it in a platform machine.

The rules are different for regional paper tickets, which generally must be validated before travel. Trenitalia's current Digital Regional Ticket activates automatically at the scheduled departure of the selected regional train. That distinction matters if you deliberately choose a slower regional itinerary or add a separate regional connection.

What is the booking process?

1. Search Roma Termini to Firenze Santa Maria Novella on Trenitalia and Italo.
2. Compare total journey time, not only departure time.
3. Open the fare conditions and check changes and refunds.
4. Enter each passenger's details exactly as requested.
5. Save the ticket offline and note the coach and seat numbers.

Booking direct usually makes disruption support and ticket changes simpler. A reseller can be useful for comparing options, but check its service fee and whether after-sales changes must go through the reseller.

When should you arrive?

Aim to reach the station about 20–30 minutes before departure if it is your first visit. Italian high-speed trains do not use airport-style check-in, but Rome Termini is large and platform numbers can appear relatively close to departure.

At the station, check the train number and final destination—not only “Florence.” Your train may continue to Bologna, Milan or another city after you get off.

Luggage on the train

You carry your own luggage onto the train. Small bags fit above the seats; larger suitcases use racks near the doors or within the coach. Keep valuables, travel documents and medication with you, and use a bag you can lift without depending on another passenger.

Do not leave your phone or wallet at the seat while visiting the café area. At busy stations, stand near the door only when Florence is approaching so you do not block the aisle for other passengers.

Can you visit Florence as a day trip from Rome?

Yes. A morning departure and evening return can give you a useful day in Florence. Santa Maria Novella is walkable to the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria, Ponte Vecchio and much of the historic centre.

A day trip works best when you choose one major museum and reserve a timed entry. Trying to fit the Uffizi, Accademia, Duomo complex and every viewpoint into a few hours turns an easy rail trip into a rushed checklist. If Florence is a priority, stay at least one night.
