Is Eurostar Premier Worth It? Benefits vs Price

Premier is not simply a wider seat. The real upgrade is flexibility: lounge access, priority gates and a ticket you can still change—or refund—after departure.

Quick verdict

Eurostar Premier is usually worth it for a time-sensitive business trip, an uncertain schedule or a high-stakes connection. For a fixed leisure journey, Eurostar Plus normally delivers the best-value comfort because it already includes extra-spacious seating and, on London routes, a light meal.

The price difference between Plus and Premier changes by train and date, so there is no single upgrade price that always makes sense. The useful question is not “Is Premier luxurious?” It is “Which Premier benefit would I actually pay for on this trip?”

If you only want more legroom, Plus may be enough. If a missed meeting or last-minute schedule change could cost more than the upgrade, Premier becomes much easier to justify.

The flexibility is the benefit with the highest value

Standard and Plus tickets can normally be changed without an exchange fee until one hour before departure, but you pay any increase in fare. Refunds are only available at least seven days before departure and carry a fee.

Premier extends both exchanges and refunds until 48 hours after the original departure. Exchanges can still require a fare difference, but the ticket also includes a same-day boarding guarantee. When your plans change on the travel day, you can move to another available train without paying that fare difference.

Important limitation

The boarding guarantee does not promise your original seat, Premier service or onboard catering when the new train is full. Eurostar also cannot guarantee a place where no safe availability exists.

What the lounge actually adds

Premier passengers can use Eurostar lounges in London, Paris and Brussels. Eurostar says access is normally available up to two hours before departure, depending on capacity. Partner lounge access is also available at Amsterdam Centraal and Rotterdam Centraal.

The lounge is most valuable when you plan to work, need a quiet place between appointments or would otherwise buy food and drinks in the station. It matters less when you arrive close to departure and head directly through the formalities.

Priority gates save friction, not the whole check-in process

On London routes, Premier includes priority ticket gates. That can shorten the entrance queue, especially at busy times, but you still complete security and border controls. Premier is not an invitation to arrive at the last minute.

Do not upgrade only for the seat

This is the most important value point: Eurostar Plus already offers extra-spacious seating. Premier provides a more complete premium experience, but the seat alone may not justify a large price gap.

On services to and from London, Plus also includes a light meal and drinks served at your seat. Premier improves the dining experience with a more elaborate menu on selected routes. Food is a pleasant benefit, but on a journey of roughly two to three hours it rarely pays for a large upgrade by itself.

The third bag can change the calculation

Standard and Plus include two large pieces of luggage plus one small hand item. Premier increases that to three large pieces plus one hand item. There is no standard weight limit, but you must be able to lift and carry your own bags safely.

If the third piece avoids shipping equipment or buying a separate luggage service, it can provide real value. For most weekend travelers, it will not matter.

A simple way to decide if the upgrade is worth it

Compare the live Plus and Premier fares for the same train, then value only the benefits you will genuinely use:

  1. Flexibility: What would a late change, missed train or cancellation cost you?
  2. Lounge: Will you arrive early enough to use it?
  3. Time: Does the priority lane reduce stress on a busy workday?
  4. Food: Subtract what you would otherwise spend at the station or onboard.
  5. Luggage: Do you genuinely need the third large bag?

If those benefits are worth more to you than the fare gap, choose Premier. If most answers are “no,” choose Plus and keep the difference for your hotel or another train journey.

Who should book Eurostar Premier?

Premier is a strong fit when

You are traveling for business, your return time may change, you have an important onward connection, you want to work before departure, or you need the third luggage allowance.

Choose Plus instead when

Your plans are fixed, you mainly want a more spacious seat, you will not use the lounge, and the Premier fare is substantially higher.

Frequently asked questions

Is Eurostar Premier the same as first class?

Premier is Eurostar's highest travel class. It combines premium service with the operator's most flexible ticket conditions.

Does Premier include lounge access?

Yes. Premier passengers can use Eurostar lounges in London, Paris and Brussels, normally up to two hours before departure depending on capacity.

Can I upgrade a Plus ticket to Premier later?

Eurostar's current conditions allow Standard tickets to be upgraded to Plus, but do not allow upgrades to Premier. If Premier matters, select it when booking.

Can I refund Premier after missing the train?

Premier remains refundable without a fee until 48 hours after the original departure time. After that deadline, it becomes non-refundable.

Does Premier guarantee a seat on any train?

The same-day boarding guarantee helps you move to another available train, but it cannot guarantee a specific seat, the same class or identical onboard service.

The practical verdict

Eurostar Premier is worth paying for when uncertainty is expensive. Its strongest benefits are the generous refund window and same-day boarding guarantee—not simply the seat or meal. For a predictable leisure trip, Plus is usually the smarter value. For a schedule that may change, Premier can operate like useful travel insurance with a better station experience attached.
