AVE: the flexible all-rounder
AVE is Renfe's full-service high-speed brand. It is usually the easiest starting point for travelers who want a broad schedule, more generous standard luggage rules and the possibility of a through Renfe itinerary.
Renfe's fare names matter. Básico is designed around a lower entry price. Elige adds more choice and currently refunds 70% of the ticket value when canceled under its conditions. Prémium provides the broadest package on eligible domestic services. Add-ons can also improve exchanges or refunds, but they must be selected under the conditions shown during purchase.
AVE and other eligible Renfe long-distance tickets may include Combinado Cercanías, allowing a local commuter journey before and after the high-speed train. Do not assume every low-cost or competitor ticket includes this benefit; check for the code or wording on your ticket.

Avlo: low price, smaller included baggage
Avlo is Renfe's low-cost brand. It uses high-speed trains with assigned seats, power outlets and free Wi-Fi, but strips the ticket back to a smaller included package. Renfe recommends arriving at least 30 minutes before departure, and boarding control closes shortly before the train leaves.
The basic Avlo allowance currently includes one small hand item up to 36 × 27 × 25 cm and one cabin bag up to 55 × 35 × 25 cm. A full-size suitcase can require an add-on. Measure the wheels and handles too; a fare is not genuinely cheap if you discover the baggage difference at the station.

iryo operates modern high-speed trains and divides its product into several fare levels. Inicial is the lowest-priced option and includes a personal item plus cabin baggage. Inicial Superior adds greater flexibility, while Infinita options move toward larger seats and more included service.

OUIGO: compare the total, not the headline price
OUIGO España can be excellent value, particularly for a short trip with a small bag. Each base ticket currently includes one hand item up to 27 × 36 × 15 cm and one cabin bag up to 55 × 35 × 25 cm. A larger piece, up to the operator's stated limits, must be added separately unless included in the package you select.
Before paying, add the luggage, seat and flexibility you actually need. Then compare the final total with AVE and iryo—not the promotional starting price. Also check whether the service is nonstop or calls at Zaragoza and Tarragona, because that affects the journey time.

How much do tickets cost?
There is no reliable single “normal price.” All four operators use demand-based fares, so the cost changes with the train, day, booking date and remaining inventory. Promotional low fares exist, but they are limited and often attach to the least flexible product.
Search all operators for the same travel window. A train 30 or 60 minutes earlier can cost far less. Fridays, Sunday evenings, public holidays and business-friendly departures tend to sell faster.
