Direct booking does not guarantee the lowest fare, but it normally gives the cleanest path for changes, refunds and disruption. A reseller can be useful when it displays several operators in one search. Before paying, check who issues the ticket and who must handle a cancellation.

Renfe tickets: Básico, Elige and Prémium
Renfe operates AVE, Alvia, Euromed, Intercity, Avlo, Avant, Media Distancia and regional services. The fare names and conditions depend on the train category, so do not apply AVE rules to a commuter or regional ticket.
Básico
Básico is the lowest AVE and long-distance entry fare. Renfe states that the usual flexibility add-ons are not available for Básico. It suits a fixed trip when the saving is worth accepting strict conditions.
Elige
Elige and Elige Confort allow cancellation under current Renfe rules, with a partial refund unless a stronger refund add-on was purchased. They are the sensible comparison when the trip may change.
Prémium
Prémium bundles broader service and flexibility on eligible trains. Renfe’s current page lists three pieces of luggage and includes its total-refund option. Confirm that the chosen train actually offers Prémium.
Renfe also states that AVE and long-distance tickets are nominative. Carry valid photo ID because it can be checked at boarding or onboard.

iryo tickets: compare the included package
iryo competes on major high-speed corridors with several fare levels. The lowest visible price may include a personal item and cabin bag but not a large suitcase. Higher products add space, food or flexibility, so compare the actual package rather than assuming every iryo ticket is the same.
For example, iryo’s current Inicial Superior fare includes hand luggage and a cabin bag, with a large suitcase available for an extra charge. It allows date changes by paying any fare difference and gives partial cancellation refunds under the published timing rules.
iryo also introduced an Espacio Silencio product in 2026 on its high-speed network. This is a product choice, not a separate train; check the passenger and coach conditions during booking.

OUIGO Spain tickets: add luggage before comparing
OUIGO Spain sells a low-cost base product. The current allowance includes one small hand item up to 27 × 36 × 15 cm and one cabin bag up to 55 × 35 × 25 cm. A larger bag can be added under the operator’s limits, including a maximum weight stated during booking.
The fare can be excellent for a short trip with light luggage. For a two-week itinerary, the final amount after luggage, seat and flexibility can narrow the gap with AVE or iryo. Add everything before you compare totals.
Tickets are managed digitally through the website or app. OUIGOFLEX is an optional flexibility product; read its conditions rather than assuming every low-cost ticket allows unlimited free changes.

When should you book Spanish trains?
Book high-speed and long-distance trains after sales open when your dates are fixed. Operators use limited fare inventory, so Friday evenings, Sunday returns, holidays and business-friendly departures can become expensive or sell out.
Do not panic if a far-future train is missing. Spanish timetables and inventory can load progressively, especially around the June and December timetable changes. Search the operator directly and compare nearby dates before concluding that the route does not run.

Station names that cause booking mistakes
- Madrid Puerta de Atocha–Almudena Grandes: main station for Barcelona, Valencia and many southern high-speed routes.
- Madrid Chamartín–Clara Campoamor: used by many northern routes and selected Mediterranean services.
- Barcelona Sants: principal long-distance station in Barcelona.
- Sevilla Santa Justa: main high-speed station in Seville.
- València Joaquín Sorolla: high-speed station, distinct from València Nord.
Madrid is the most important trap: “Madrid” does not guarantee Atocha. A cross-city connection between Atocha and Chamartín requires time. Use the connection checker and confirm whether the journey is protected on one ticket.
Payment, names and ticket delivery
Enter the passenger’s name consistently with the ID you will carry. For foreign travelers, a passport is the simplest reference. Do not invent a Spanish ID number when the form offers passport or another document type.
International cards can occasionally trigger payment verification. If one official site fails, try its app, another supported card or PayPal where offered before moving to an unknown seller. Never pay twice until you confirm whether the first charge produced a valid ticket.
Download the PDF or mobile barcode immediately, save it offline and keep the confirmation email. A bank authorization alone is not a ticket. The document should show the passenger, train number, date, route and seat where applicable.
What happens at a Spanish high-speed station?
High-speed stations normally screen luggage before access to the platform area. This is not an airport check-in, but arriving at the final minute can make you miss boarding. Operators close access shortly before departure.
- Check the station and departure area before arriving.
