Paris to Amsterdam by Train: Time, Tickets & Stops
A direct city-centre train turns two famous capitals into one straightforward rail journey. The important decisions are which departure to book, what the fare includes and whether a rail pass actually saves money.
Direct Eurostar trains run from Paris Gare du Nord to Amsterdam Centraal. Eurostar advertises a fastest journey of about 3 hours 20 minutes, while many dated trains take roughly 3h30–3h40. Selected one-way fares start from €35, but the cheapest seats are limited and rise with demand.

How long is the train from Paris to Amsterdam?
Eurostar’s route page gives 3 hours 20 minutes as the headline direct time. That is a useful best case, not a promise for every departure. Dated timetables commonly show journeys closer to 3 hours 30–40 minutes because stopping patterns and infrastructure work vary.
The train still compares well with flying because the advertised rail time starts and ends in the city centres. A flight comparison must also include travel to a Paris airport, security, boarding, baggage collection and the transfer back from Schiphol. For most city-centre trips, the direct train is the simpler door-to-door option.
Is the Paris to Amsterdam train direct?
Yes. On a direct Eurostar, you keep the same seat from Paris to Amsterdam. The northbound route normally runs through Brussels-Midi/Zuid, Antwerpen-Centraal, Rotterdam Centraal and Schiphol Airport before Amsterdam Centraal. A specific service may skip a stop or use an amended timetable, so rely on the calling points shown on your ticket.
NS International describes up to ten Eurostar journeys a day on the Amsterdam–Paris corridor. Frequency is not a guarantee for every date: weekend engineering works, holidays and disruption can reduce or alter the service.
A search result can be labelled Paris–Amsterdam even when it includes a change at Brussels. Choose a train marked direct if you want to avoid moving luggage and risking a connection.
Paris Gare du Nord: what to expect
This continental Eurostar is different from a Paris–London departure. France, Belgium and the Netherlands are inside the Schengen travel area, so there is no London-style pre-departure passport and security terminal for this route. Eurostar recommends arriving about 20 minutes before departure for Paris–Amsterdam.
- Confirm the train number and Amsterdam Centraal on the departure board.
- Keep the mobile ticket downloaded or carry a printed copy.
- Reach the platform before boarding closes and find the coach number.
- Store large luggage quickly so the aisle remains clear.
If you are connecting from another Paris station, do not treat 20 minutes as your total transfer allowance. For an arrival from London, follow our Gare du Nord transfer guide only when your onward train actually leaves Gare de Lyon; Amsterdam trains leave Gare du Nord itself.
How much do Paris to Amsterdam tickets cost?
Eurostar and NS International currently advertise selected one-way fares from €35. That figure is a limited entry price, not the fare you should build an inflexible budget around. Popular Fridays, Sundays, holidays and useful morning departures can cost considerably more.
Use this booking sequence:
- Search your real travel date on Eurostar or another official railway retailer.
- Compare two or three nearby departures, not only the first result.
- Check that Amsterdam Centraal—not Schiphol or Rotterdam—is the destination you need.
- Compare Standard, Plus and Premier using the final price and fare rules.
- Download the ticket and recheck service updates before leaving Paris.
Eurostar says continental-route tickets to the Netherlands can often be released roughly 10–11 months ahead, though exact sales horizons can change. Booking early improves access to the lowest fare buckets, but it does not make a non-refundable plan sensible. Our European train booking-window guide explains when to book and when to wait.

Eurostar Standard, Plus or Premier?
| Class | Best for | Check before paying more |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Lowest available fare | Exact refund conditions and seat preference |
| Plus | More space and a quieter work-friendly trip | Whether the price gap is worth it for 3½ hours |
| Premier | Maximum flexibility and premium service | Whether flexibility—not just comfort—justifies the fare |
Standard is the practical default. Plus makes sense when the price gap is modest or you value space for working. Premier is easiest to justify when plans may change and the flexible conditions have real financial value.
Luggage and travel documents
On Eurostar services between France and the Netherlands, Standard and Plus passengers may take two pieces of luggage up to 75 × 53 × 30 cm plus one item of hand luggage. There is no stated weight limit, but you must carry and store everything yourself. Premier includes a larger allowance. Check special-item rules for bicycles, sports equipment and unusually large cases.
Eurostar says there are no routine travel-document requirements for journeys between France, Belgium and the Netherlands, but recommends carrying a passport or identity document because spot checks can occur. Your nationality and immigration status still determine which document is valid; operator wording does not replace official entry rules.
Allowances and document guidance checked on Eurostar’s official luggage page and travel-documents page.
Can you use Eurail or Interrail?
Yes, a valid Eurail or Interrail pass can cover the rail journey, but it does not let you board this Eurostar freely. A compulsory passholder reservation is required, and the number of passholder places can be limited even while ordinary tickets remain for sale.
Price the pass day and reservation together, then compare that total with a normal ticket. A point-to-point fare from €35 can beat the reservation-plus-pass-day cost, especially if Paris–Amsterdam is one of only a few long journeys. Read our Eurail Pass cost comparison before using a valuable travel day.
Passholder rule checked on the official Eurail Eurostar guide: reservations are mandatory and should be booked early.
Arriving at Amsterdam Centraal
Amsterdam Centraal is beside the historic centre and connects with trams, Metro, buses, ferries and Dutch domestic trains. The station is large and works can change walking routes, so check the exit closest to your accommodation rather than following the crowd automatically.
If Amsterdam is one stop in a longer trip, avoid booking a tight onward connection on a separate ticket. Add enough time to find the platform and absorb a late international arrival. Use the Connection Checker for a risk estimate, then confirm the actual itinerary with the operator.
