How Far Is Lyon From Paris? Train Time & Tickets

France’s original high-speed corridor makes Lyon feel much closer than the map suggests. The main decision is not whether to take the train, but which train, station and fare fit your day.

Quick answer

Lyon is approximately 422 km (262 miles) from Paris by rail. The fastest current direct train takes about 1 hour 43 minutes, while many TGV INOUI and OUIGO departures take around two hours. For the simplest city-centre trip, compare Paris Gare de Lyon to Lyon Part-Dieu.

How long is the train from Paris to Lyon?

The fastest direct journey currently takes about 1 hour 43 minutes. Many useful TGV INOUI and OUIGO services take roughly 1 hour 50 minutes to just over two hours, depending on the stations and stopping pattern.

SNCF Connect also lists slower direct TER or OUIGO Train Classique options on some dates. A journey marked “direct” is not automatically high-speed: check the duration and operator before paying. A five-hour regional train can be cheaper, but it uses most of a travel day that a TGV leaves free.

TGV INOUI or OUIGO: which should you choose?

Both can provide a fast direct journey. Compare the complete fare rather than the first price because luggage, seat selection and flexibility are handled differently.

OUIGO also sells a slower Train Classique on some Paris–Lyon journeys. Treat it as a different product from OUIGO Grande Vitesse. If the saving is small, the high-speed train’s time advantage usually matters more.

Which stations should you book?

Paris Gare de Lyon

Most central high-speed services leave Paris Gare de Lyon. The name is confusing because it is a station in Paris, not Lyon. If your ticket says Marne-la-Vallée–Chessy, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport or Paris Bercy, you are not leaving from the same place.

Travelers arriving from London at Gare du Nord must cross Paris. Follow our Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon transfer guide and allow a generous buffer.

Lyon Part-Dieu

Part-Dieu is the main business-district station and the most common arrival on this route. It has metro, tram and local rail connections, but it is not inside Vieux Lyon. Check the onward journey to your accommodation before selecting the train.

Lyon Perrache

Perrache can be more convenient for the Presqu’île and parts of central Lyon. Some trains serve both Part-Dieu and Perrache; others do not. Read the full arrival station instead of treating every “Lyon” result as identical.

Lyon Saint-Exupéry TGV

Saint-Exupéry TGV is at the airport, outside central Lyon. It is useful for a flight connection but usually inconvenient for a city break. A cheap ticket is not a bargain if you then need a long airport transfer.

How much do Paris to Lyon tickets cost?

SNCF Connect currently advertises selected one-way tickets from €10, subject to availability. OUIGO’s route information commonly promotes high-speed fares from around €16. These are starting prices, not normal guaranteed fares.

  1. Compare TGV INOUI and OUIGO for the same day.
  2. Check whether the result is high-speed or Train Classique/TER.
  3. Confirm both the Paris and Lyon stations.
  4. Add luggage and seat options before comparing totals.
  5. Read exchange and refund conditions before payment.

Friday evenings, Sunday returns and major Lyon events can sell the cheapest fares early. If your date is fixed, book the train before committing to non-refundable plans around a specific arrival time.

Luggage rules on Paris–Lyon trains

TGV INOUI currently permits either two suitcases plus one hand item, or one suitcase, one special item and one hand item. A suitcase can measure up to 70 × 90 × 50 cm and the small item up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm. You must label the bags and be able to carry all of them yourself in one trip.

OUIGO ESSENTIEL includes one carry-on bag up to 55 × 35 × 25 cm and one hand item up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm. Additional or XL luggage is an extra option; OUIGO PLUS currently includes one additional or XL bag and seat selection.

Allowances and current options checked on SNCF Connect’s official luggage guide and its Paris–Lyon route page.

Do you need to validate the ticket?

A named TGV INOUI or OUIGO ticket is tied to a particular train, coach and seat. Keep the mobile ticket or booking code available and board the service shown on it. You do not stamp this reserved high-speed ticket in a platform machine.

Regional tickets use different rules. If you choose a TER itinerary, follow the activation or validation instructions attached to that product.

When should you arrive?

There is no airport-style check-in, but access gates can close shortly before departure. For a first visit, arrive about 20–30 minutes early so you can confirm the hall, platform and coach without rushing.

At Paris Gare de Lyon, verify Hall 1, 2 or 3 when shown. At Lyon, check whether your train ends at Part-Dieu or continues to Perrache before preparing to leave the coach.

Is Lyon a day trip from Paris?

Yes. A morning high-speed train and evening return can give you a useful day in Lyon. The journey is short enough for a focused visit to Vieux Lyon, the Presqu’île and a planned meal.

A day trip still means nearly four hours on trains plus station transfers. Stay one or two nights if food, museums or neighborhoods are the main reason for visiting rather than trying to treat Lyon as a checklist.

Is the route scenic?

The high-speed line crosses open countryside and agricultural landscapes, but it is primarily a fast transport route rather than a panoramic railway. Views pass quickly, and cuttings or infrastructure interrupt them. Choose the service for its speed and station convenience.
