Brussels Winter Wonders is scheduled from November 27, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Visit Brussels describes roughly 250 chalets across the historic centre, so this is a spread-out city event rather than one fenced market.
Eurostar advertises a direct London–Brussels journey of 1 hour 53 minutes. Trains arrive at Brussels-Midi/Zuid; use a frequent local train to Brussels-Central or the metro toward the centre instead of walking with luggage. 2. Cologne Cathedral market: easiest station-to-market arrival
Cologne’s Cathedral Christmas Market is scheduled from November 16 to December 23, 2026, with a closure on November 22. The location is the main advantage: Roncalliplatz sits beside Cologne Cathedral, immediately outside Köln Hauptbahnhof.
Eurostar advertises Brussels–Cologne in 1 hour 50 minutes. Deutsche Bahn also operates ICE services between Belgium and Germany. That makes Cologne the cleanest second stop after Brussels, without an airport transfer or cross-city station change.
- Stay: two nights if you want to compare several Cologne markets; one night for the Cathedral market only.
- Best for: simple logistics and a classic German market backdrop.
- Watch out: Cologne has multiple markets with different dates and atmospheres.

3. Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt: best traditional German stop
Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt is confirmed for November 27 to December 24, 2026. The ceremonial opening is scheduled for 5:30 pm on November 27, while regular published hours are 10:00 am–9:00 pm; December 24 has shorter hours.
The market occupies Hauptmarkt in the old town. From Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof, travel light enough to use local transport or walk after leaving luggage at your hotel. Cologne–Nuremberg is the longest German sector in this itinerary, so choose a morning ICE and avoid scheduling a fixed evening event immediately after arrival.

4. Vienna Christmas markets: best for variety
Vienna is not one market. Rathausplatz, Schönbrunn, Belvedere, Spittelberg and other locations offer different settings and products. The official tourism office states that the main season runs from mid-November until Christmas, but market-specific 2026 dates were not fully published when this guide was checked.
That uncertainty matters. Choose your preferred Vienna market first, then wait for its official dates before locking a non-refundable hotel. Wien Hauptbahnhof is well connected to local transit, but the markets are spread around the city; book accommodation for transport convenience rather than assuming every market is beside the station.

5. Prague Old Town and Wenceslas Square: best late-season finale
Prague City Tourism lists both Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square markets from November 28, 2026 to January 6, 2027. That makes Prague a better finale than a German market if your trip crosses Christmas Day or New Year.
Czech Railways publishes direct Prague–Vienna Railjet trains every two hours, with a typical journey of about four hours. From Praha hlavní nádraží, leave luggage before heading into the historic centre; the route to Old Town is manageable but cobbles and crowds are unpleasant with a suitcase.
- Stay: two or three nights.
- Best for: a post-Christmas trip and a dramatic historic setting.
- Watch out: Old Town Square is extremely busy in the evening; visit once in the morning as well.

Alternative route: Strasbourg and Basel
For a shorter trip, combine Strasbourg with Basel instead of crossing Germany to Prague. Basel’s main Christmas market is confirmed from November 26 to December 23, 2026 at Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz. Strasbourg has announced a late-November return, but its exact 2026 dates and programme were still being finalised on August 27.
Do not use last year’s Strasbourg dates as if they were confirmed. Reserve flexible accommodation or wait for the official announcement. Basel is a strong fallback because its dates are published and Basel SBB has useful rail links toward France, Germany and the rest of Switzerland.

How early should you book?
- Confirm the market dates first. Do not let an old blog post determine a non-refundable trip.
- Book high-demand accommodation next. Central hotels for Friday and Saturday nights usually create more pressure than weekday trains.
- Book international and long-distance trains when sales open. Flexible tickets cost more but protect an itinerary whose dates are still moving.
- Add local transport later. Most city tickets do not need months of advance planning.
- Recheck after the December timetable change. Operators can adjust platforms, times and engineering plans.
