How Early to Arrive for Eurostar: Station Guide
Eurostar does not use one universal check-in time. Your station, route, travel class and accessibility needs determine the right arrival target—and the gate-closing time is not the time you should aim for.

Recommended time is different from gate closure
The most important distinction is between the recommended arrival time and the final gate deadline. The recommendation gives time to complete every step. The gate-closing time is the last operational cutoff, not a safe target.
For London routes, Eurostar currently lists gate closure 30 minutes before departure for Standard and Plus, 15 minutes for Premier and 30 minutes for accessible travel at the stations above. Arriving one minute before that cutoff gives no protection against a Tube delay, a queue at ticket gates or a document problem.
If your train leaves St Pancras at 10:00 in Standard, the current recommended station arrival is 08:45. The gate may close at 09:30, but 09:29 is not a sensible plan.
What happens before a Eurostar train to London?
- Ticket scan. Scan the barcode at the Eurostar entrance gates.
- Luggage security. Bags pass through screening while you go through a security check.
- Border controls. Passport formalities take place before departure on London routes.
- Departure lounge. Wait until the platform and boarding call appear.

A 10:00 train with a 75-minute recommendation means reaching the Eurostar departure area at 08:45—not arriving at a distant London terminal then.
King's Cross St Pancras Underground station is large, and the walk from some lines takes time. If you are arriving on another train, allow for its delay and the walk through the station complex. Separate tickets usually leave the connection risk with you.
How early for Paris Gare du Nord?

For London-bound Standard and Plus travelers, the current recommendations are 45–60 minutes at Brussels, 75–90 minutes at Amsterdam, 60 minutes at Lille and 45–60 minutes at Rotterdam. Premier targets are shorter, while accessible travel is 60 minutes at each.
At Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Eurostar also recommends downloading the ticket the day before travel because you need its QR code to pass the station ticket gates before reaching the Eurostar process.
What about Eurostar routes that do not go to London?
Eurostar's continental trains between France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany use a simpler process. The operator currently recommends arriving 20 minutes before the scheduled departure and being ready to board at least five minutes before departure—or ten minutes at Paris Gare du Nord.
This continental guidance does not apply to a London train, where passport and luggage checks happen before departure. Confirm the train's route rather than applying the shortest Eurostar timing to every service.
Should first-time travelers add extra time?
The published recommendation is designed for the formal process. Add a personal buffer when you are unfamiliar with the station, traveling with children, carrying several bags, using a long cross-city transfer or arriving from an unprotected connection.
Do not automatically arrive three hours early. Excessive waiting can be uncomfortable, and departure lounges have finite space. A useful plan is the official recommendation plus a realistic margin for the journey to the station. Eurostar asks passengers to arrive at the recommended time rather than only before the gates close.

Suppose your Standard ticket from London to Paris leaves at 10:00. Eurostar's current recommendation puts you at the St Pancras Eurostar entrance by 08:45. If your hotel-to-station trip normally takes 25 minutes, do not leave at 08:20 exactly. Add local transport and walking margin—perhaps leaving around 08:00 depending on the route and day.
