How to Get From Paris to Venice by Train
The useful route is a full-day journey through the Alps with one change in Milan. The station details matter as much as the headline travel time.
Travel from Paris Gare de Lyon to Milan on TGV INOUI Italy or Frecciarossa, then take a high-speed train to Venezia Santa Lucia. There is no regular direct Paris–Venice train. Allow roughly 10.5 to 12 hours in total and check whether your Paris train arrives at Milano Porta Garibaldi or Milano Centrale before choosing the connection.
How to get from Paris to Venice by train
- Board a direct TGV INOUI Italy or Frecciarossa from Paris Gare de Lyon to Milan.
- Confirm the exact Milan arrival station on the ticket.
- Transfer to the correct station if the Venice train leaves from Milano Centrale.
- Take Frecciarossa, Italo or another valid high-speed service to Venezia Santa Lucia.
- Keep enough buffer for the Milan change, especially with separate tickets.
SNCF Connect currently shows direct Paris–Milan TGVs taking about 7 hours 5–7 minutes. Trenitalia lists Milan–Venice Frecciarossa journeys from about 2 hours 27 minutes. The theoretical total is therefore under ten hours, but a safe connection and possible cross-city transfer push the practical journey above that.

Option 1: TGV INOUI to Milan, then Venice
The SNCF daytime trains leave Paris Gare de Lyon and currently reach Milano Porta Garibaldi in a little over seven hours. The route passes Lyon’s high-speed area, Chambéry, Modane, Turin and the Alpine border corridor before Milan.
The complication is the Milan station. Many domestic Venice trains depart from Milano Centrale, while the TGV may arrive at Porta Garibaldi. Those stations are not interchangeable. The metro journey is short, but finding the exit, buying or validating local transport and moving luggage adds time.
Use at least 60–75 minutes when changing from Porta Garibaldi to Centrale on separate tickets. Use more if this is your first visit, you have mobility needs or the Paris train is the last practical connection of the day. A tight change is not worth risking a fixed Venice ticket.

Option 2: Frecciarossa from Paris, then Venice
Trenitalia restored its Paris–Milan Frecciarossa service after the Maurienne line reopened. Trenitalia’s official announcement lists two Paris departures and an approximately seven-hour journey, with stops including Lyon, Chambéry, Modane and Turin.
Booking the international and domestic legs through Trenitalia can make comparison easier, but do not assume that one checkout automatically creates protected through-ticket rights. Read the conditions and confirm the arrival and departure stations shown for the proposed Milan connection.

How much time should you allow in Milan?

Venezia Santa Lucia or Venezia Mestre?
Venezia Santa Lucia is the station on the islands, beside the Grand Canal. It is the right target for most first-time visitors staying in central Venice. You walk out of the station directly into the historic city and continue on foot or by vaporetto.
Venezia Mestre is on the mainland. It can be useful for a mainland hotel, a cheaper overnight stay or an onward road connection. If your accommodation is on the islands, Mestre adds another local train or bus journey. Confirm the full station name before booking.
Is there a useful overnight train?
There is no simple direct Paris–Venice sleeper in the current regular timetable. Night-train combinations through Germany, Austria or Switzerland can reduce daytime travel but require more changes and careful date matching. They are not automatically faster or cheaper than the daytime Milan route.
A practical overnight alternative is to take a late train to an intermediate city, stay near the station and continue the next morning. Can you use Eurail or Interrail?
Eligible passes can cover both legs, but reservations are compulsory on the international high-speed train and on Italian high-speed services. Pass-holder inventory can be limited, so confirm the hardest reservation before committing the travel day.

What the full journey feels like
This is a long but scenic travel day. The international leg crosses the French Alps and enters Italy through Turin. After Milan, the route runs east across northern Italy before crossing the lagoon causeway into Venice.
